This is also another reminder that brands are looking to make money at the end of the day and will do what they need to do to maintain their hold.This time the music has become a necessity for almost everyone, due to this reason current smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy SIII is always complemented by applications that allow their users to be able to easily listen to music anywhere and anytime using the music player on their phones. This puts the customer in a very tricky situation, where they have to either settle for an older phone with radio or make do without tuning in to the FM and enjoy a brand-new phone. Apple shows the biggest middle finger to its customers, by not even including an FM receiver (the iPhone 6S was the last one), in hopes that they will opt for the paid Apple Music service. The carriers can enable it if they want, but would they? Practically, most current Android phones have the hardware built into the modem, built by Qualcomm. This move forces consumers to pay for OTT services or music-streaming platforms to. Certain companies can earn more if they keep it disabled. This is a major hassle for the manufacturers, and pretty much increases their production efforts, so they technically just decide against enabling it all together.
So, the FM receivers will have to be tuned according to where it will be sold. While all phones are mass-manufactured in one country, they are sold around the world. There are two main reasons for this and both are equally disappointing. Some of the recent smartphones such as the LG V40 ThinQ, Poco F1 and the latest Samsung M-series, do have an FM radio built in, just that it is disabled. Turns out, we haven’t entirely lost them. So, then why did we even lose out on radios from all of our smartphones? And even if not, radios are extremely important for emergency broadcasts and communication, when other means or communication may die off. Surely, the internet did render them redundant, but there is still a big nostalgia factor attached to it.
But over the past few years, we saw them die slowly. It was the first source of information for sports, achievements, breaking news, and even gossip. Radios were all the rage a decade ago, serving as the prime source of free entertainment to many consumers. Amongst the list of old and outdated tech which were put to rest, with the advent of the smartphone, is the humble FM radio. Smartphones and the internet, with these two, we barely need any other piece of electronics.
